Traffic Signals
Traffic lights use colored lenses in front of incandescent lamps, which reduce the efficiency of the light source to very low levels. Light emitting diodes (LED) directly produce colored light. LEDs are energy efficient, and very long life. The ELI specifications for traffic signals only requires that a traffic signal use LEDs as the light source at least for the red signal, where the substitution in most cost effective.
