Market Aggregation
Micro-Credit Financing Models:
ELI attempted to pioneer a new form of market aggregation in the
Philippines, notably working with consumer cooperatives that have
multiplied in number and which are spread throughout the country.
Currently, consumer cooperatives sell everything from shoes to
mobile phones to their member/owners. Since these cooperatives
already have an affinity with and trust of their members and provide
“micro-credit” financing to their members, and have
billing relationships with their members, they appeared ideal
for the role as market aggregators for CFLs.
In December 2002, ELI was able to ink an agreement
among manufacturer-importers of energy efficient CFLs and the
Metro Manila Federation of Consumer Cooperatives (MMAFECCO). This
allowed ELI to promote and facilitate the marketing and distribution
of ELI-qualified CFLs and other efficient lighting products through
MMAFECCO’s 22 member consumer cooperatives.
On 26 July 2003, ELI gathered as many MMAFECCO
member cooperatives that were interested to sell ELI-qualified
lighting products for the purposes of building relationships and
initiating commercial agreements between MMAFECCO member cooperatives
and lighting manufacturers-importers.
ELI Philippines hopes that this activity will
pave the way for subsequent commercial agreements between manufacturers/importers
and cooperatives in other parts of the Philippines, and by doing
so, accelerate the distribution of ELI-qualified CFL products
through consumer cooperatives.
