Overview of activities

Training for Lighting Professionals

•  Market research into needs of lighting specialists in Latvia (implemented in April, May 2000)

•  Preparation of training programs, creation of database of potential course participants and lecturers as well as collection of materials for use as training materials (implemented in 2000 and early 2001)

•  Training courses for five target groups: project designers and installers, wholesalers and retailers, municipalities, architects, and journalists, were held in 2001-2003

•  Follow up activities of training courses in 2001 - 2003.

The training activities created a group of like-minded people who understand the benefits of energy-efficient lighting: the ice is now broken. Lighting specialists who participated in ELI training courses are amenable to energy efficiency projects. ELI certificates were received by:

•  27 project designers and installation specialists

•  10 wholesalers and retailers

•  10 architects

•  42 municipal specialists.

Owners of ELI training course certificates are using them as qualification documents when submitting proposals in tenders for building and installation.

The training materials ELI created were truly groundbreaking: they were the first materials on efficient lighting ever written in Latvian. In some cases, ELI even had to invent Latvian words for energy-efficient lighting terms, as these did not yet exist.

A database of lighting contacts (project designers, specialists for installation, architects, wholesalers and retailers, representatives of municipalities) in Latvia was prepared. 305 names are in the database. A curriculum for training, and a cadre a trainers, are now in place.
