The
IFC/GEF Efficient Lighting Initiative (ELI)
2003
FAQ update
What can the Next Generation of ELI offer
to DSM / energy-efficient lighting programs?
The Next Generation of ELI will give Demand-Side Management (DSM)
programs around the world a tool to ensure that they only promote
products of good quality. The ELI quality mark, and the random testing
that stands behind it can reassure DSM program managers (or government
purchasers of lighting products), as well as commercial retailers,
of the quality and reliability of any product which carries the
ELI mark, thus enabling them to make an informed and secure choice
about which products they choose to promote. IFC has received expressions
of interest for using the ELI quality mark from DSM programs in
non-ELI countries including Ghana, Costa Rica and Ecuador. Indeed,
this interest, which arose spontaneously without any specific outreach
efforts on IFC’s part, was part of IFC’s motivation
for going ahead with the Next Generation. Clearly this demand highlights
the value that other parties see in the services the ELI specs and
logo provide.
